Blue Devil Girls' BB Seniors
are Honored

This was a rebuilding season for the Huntington High School girls' basketball team. Although it won't result in a championship, it may have just laid the groundwork for one in the future.

The Blue Devil squad featured seven freshmen in its ranks. That group of young players was served well by the leadership provided by seniors Laurelle Byrne-Cody and Colleen Wright, who co-captained the team and were honored prior to Huntington's final home game of the season.

The Huntington underclassmen on the team decorated with Louis D. Giani Gymnasium with posters honoring their senior teammates. Second year head coach Mike Kaplan told the crowd the two players are wonderful teenagers and have provided invaluable assistance in moving the program forward.

"Throughout the past two years, Laurelle has been a true pleasure to coach," Kaplan said about Byrne-Cody. "Although Laurelle has suffered some injuries, she has been a great role model for our players. She showed up everyday with a smile on her face ready to work hard. She challenged her teammates during practices and helped keep them motivated through the season."

Wright has also played a key role on the team. "I have had the true pleasure of coaching her for the past two years," Kaplan said. "Colleen has been a true competitor and dedicated athlete on and off the court. Her leadership and positive attitude have set a great tone for our team this year. She has been an amazing role model to all of our players. Throughout the season Colleen was often referred to as our 'grandma.' She took this young team under her wing and lead by great example."

Byrne-Cody and Wright could very well be ensconced on their respective college campuses by the time Huntington is ready to challenge for a championship. But, even though they will be many miles away from the friendly confines of the Blue Devil gym, the pair will always be able to take comfort in knowing the role they played in the program's comeback.

"They are both great kids to coach," Kaplan said. "I wish them the best of luck next year and I know the team and the coaching staff will miss them very much."
