NYSSMA Forms Available from Music Teachers

It comes as no secret that many of the best young musicians on Long Island can be found in the Huntington School District. Several have even made a splash statewide and are on the cusp of earning national reputations.

Every spring, hundreds of Huntington music students participate in the NYSSMA Festival by performing an instrumental or vocal solo (or ensemble) before a NYSSMA adjudicator.

Huntington students interested in participating in this year's NYSSMA festival should obtain one of the four NYSSMA application forms: All-State, Jazz, Level I-IV and Level V-VI from a district music teacher. Forms are also available in the district music office at Huntington High School.

NYSSMA applications must be completed, signed by parents and teachers and submitted to the student's school music teacher, along with the required monetary fee, by the March 5. All students need two original copies of the music they will perform. (Photo copies are not permitted.)

Huntington High School will be hosting the All-State and regular NYSSMA solo festival on May 11-12. Parents should contact their child's school music teacher or the district's music office at 673-2106 for more information.

Huntington students performing jazz, drum set or guitar solos will audition at the West Islip Festival on April 20-21. Students who plan to participate in this festival must return their forms to their music teachers by February 27.

"The district's music faculty recommends participation to students they feel are ready for this experience, which includes preparing a solo or ensemble piece, playing memorized scales and sight reading music," explained Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts. "Our teachers provide some coaching for lower level short pieces and recommend private instruction coaching for the upper level longer solos.  Students who score well on a NYSSMA solo may be recommended for participation in the All-County festivals."
