Huntington High School Class of 2009 member Maria Marascia is in her junior year at the University of Massachusetts where runs on the NCAA Division I track and field team.

At one time or another over the past three years, Marascia has competed in the 400m hurdles, 400m run, 500m run and 4x400m relay. She is double majoring at UMass in finance and sports management.

The 5'2 Marascia was a four-time All-League honoree in high school with the Blue Devils girls' track and field team. She was All-Division in 2008 and 2009 and at the time of her graduation held the school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.8. She also earned four varsity letters in both volleyball and basketball, playing a key role on the latter when Huntington won the Suffolk championship.

Reilly Bags 24 Points in Loss

The Huntington High School boys' basketball team faced an uphill battle against visiting Deer Park, which has lost only one league game all winter. The Falcons opened a 40-28 halftime lead en route to a 75-64 victory before a crowd of about 300 in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Trailing by 14 points in the third quarter, the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run to cut their deficit to four points. Deer Park regained its balance and pulled away once again, putting the game on ice.

Pat Reilly led Huntington with 24 points. Kiernan McGovern and Jack Forster added 18 and 11 points, respectively. John McCarthy connected for nine points.

The Blue Devils must win their final two games to qualify for the playoffs.

Glowacky is Magic

Junior Caroline Glowacky had a magic touch in going 3-0 in epee to help the Huntington High School girls' fencing topple visiting Walt Whitman, 19-8. The victory improved the Blue Devils' record to 8-5 this winter.

Puca Wins ECWC Rookie Award

Former Huntington High School mat great Louis Puca was named the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Rookie of the Week after earned All-State honors in the New York State Collegiate Championships at Cornell University. Puca, who is a college freshman, finished 3-3 in the tournament, including two pins.

Puca's three losses in the state tournament came to the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 seeds. He is 16-9 this season for Cortland State.

Cohen to the Rescue

Jackson Cohen rode to the rescue of the Huntington boys' fencing team, which topped Half Hollow Hills, 15-12. Cohen was untouchable in foil, going 3-0 and lifting the Blue Devils to victory.

The Huntington girls' team wasn't as lucky as the Thunderbirds bested the Blue Devils, 20-7.

Four Soccer Players Earn Awards

Junior Hannah Burnett earned All-County honors after turning in a great season in goal for the Huntington High School girls' soccer team. Junior Katie Healy and sophomores Megan Healy and Kim Smith were all named to the All-Conference team.

The Blue Devils compiled an overall mark of 4-6-3 (4-5-3 in league play) under head coach John J. Walsh and assistant coach Vincent Tannazzo.

Eighth grader Katie Reilly led Huntington with four goals. Junior Allison Mehring scored three times. Burnett proved to be formidable in the net, averaging 15 saves per game. She was highly regarded, even feared, by opponents.

The Blue Devils were a young team and went through some expected growing pains. There were no seniors on the 21 player roster raising hopes high for much more success next fall.

Copiague Too Much for Blue Devils

Copiague was on fire in the opening quarter against the Huntington girls' basketball team. The Eagles went on a 21-4 run en route to building a 40-15 halftime lead. It didn't get any better in the second half for the Blue Devils, who dropped a 60-33 decision.

Heather Forster's 14 points led Huntington. Raynisha Witherspoon chipped in with six points.

JV BB Nips Copiague

The Huntington junior varsity girls' basketball team edged Copiague, 37-35 in an exciting game that came down to the final horn.

Blue Devil Fencers Split

Junior Katia DeSimone was sharp as she carried the Huntington High School girls' fencing team over host Centereach, 19-8. DeSimone individual bout victory clinched the Blue Devil win.

Huntington's boys' squad wasn't as fortunate, dropping a 14-13 verdict to Centereach.
