Chamber Music Concert on
Monday Night

The Huntington School District's annual chamber music concert is an opportunity for small ensembles at different levels to play for each other and for the audience to appreciate a variety of outstanding performances.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Monday night (April 30) at 7 p.m. in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School large group instruction room, as that building's auditorium is formally known. Finley music teacher Frank Battista is coordinating the evening's program.

"Most of these ensembles will be playing these same pieces for NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) adjudication early next month, so the concert also serves as a practice run for them, prior to playing for a judge and receiving a rating," said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts.

Chamber music typically includes only one player on each part, so each student has significant individual responsibility to maintain their part and blend their style of playing with the others in the group. "There is no conductor for a chamber ensemble, so typically the lead player in the group has to provide a gesture to indicate the tempo, start and end of the piece," Ms. Fretz said.

"We hope the community will join us for an enjoyable evening of music," Superintendent James W. Polansky said.
