HHS Math Teacher Joan Lehnert
to Retire
Joan Lehnert decided now is the right time. So, the longtime Huntington High School math teacher submitted a letter of resignation and retirement to the district, effective at the end of the current school year.
Mrs. Lehnert's career in the district began in February 1993. At the time, she was split between the high school and J. Taylor Finley Middle. Since 1994, she has worked exclusively at the high school.
"I have enjoyed working here with so many fine people, in the community in which I live, and have never regretted my decision to teach," Mrs. Lehnert said.
Mrs. Lehnert earned an Associate of Arts degree at Nassau Community College in December 1977. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics at LIU-C.W. Post in May 1977 and a Master of Science in educational technology, also at C.W. Post, in May 1986.
"Joan has helped to make the Huntington High School math department a place where colleagues feel respected and supported," Principal Carmela Leonardi said. "She has used the extensive experience of the subject and her strong interpersonal skills to build an environment that is collegial and friendly."
Teaching was a second career for Mrs. Lehnert, who previously worked at Citibank. She completed her student teaching requirements at Huntington High School in 1987 under cooperating teacher Virginia Tutschulte. She initially worked in a Catholic school and then served as a leave replacement in Manhasset, before landing the position in Huntington.
Her colleagues say that Mrs. Lehnert will be missed at the school. "She helped countless students feel confident in their math skills and over the years has made countless parents feel very comfortable in the knowledge that their children were valued and well taken care of in her classes," Dr. Leonardi said.
