A retirement party is planned for Jefferson Primary School secretary Barbara Cook Abrahamson on Thursday, June 7 from 4-6 p.m. at Black and Blue Seafood Chophouse in Huntington village.

Tickets for the event are on sale for $45, which includes an assortment of appetizers and hors d'oeuvres along with a selection of beverages, coffee, tea and cake and a contribution toward a retirement gift.

Checks payable to "cash" in the proper amount can be sent to Lori Wilcox at Jefferson School or Bobbi Waller at Flower Hill School.

Universal Pre-K RFP

The Huntington School District recently opened responses to its request for proposals for 2012/13 universal pre-kindergarten program services. "It is our recommendation that of the 124 slots available, 106 be awarded to the Family Service League and 18 to Developmental Disabilities Institute," said David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services.

The Huntington School Board approved Mr. Grackin's recommendation during its public meeting this past Monday evening.

Ku & Moreira to be Honored at Tilles Center

Huntington High School seniors Andrew Ku and Roxana Moreira will be honored at the Long Island Arts Alliance scholar-artist awards gala on Sunday, April 22 at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville.

The Huntington seniors are among an elite group of 20 honorees selected from more than 200 nominees. "The LIAA scholar-artist award program, presented by New York Community Bank Foundation, is designed to acknowledge and celebrate high quality arts education in our schools," said Roger Tilles, a member of the Board of Regents. "LIAA launched this program in collaboration with Newsday, which dedicates a half-page profile to two of our scholar-artists each month throughout the school year."

Following the awards program in the Hillwood Auditorium, a reception will be held in the Tilles Center atrium for the students, their family members and attending educators.

Alum is a Senior Designer

Huntington High School Class of 2003 member Rosanna Russo is working as a senior designer at LB Architects in Brooklyn. She was previously employed as a designer at Bentel and Bentel Architects and Planning and at R. Wade Johnson Design.

Ms. Russo earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in interior design at New York Institute of Technology.

Huntington Grad at Loren Rindinger

Caroline Visbal, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 2006 is working as a senior design consultant at Motives by Loren Rindinger cosmetics.

Ms. Visbal studied at the Huntington School of Fine Arts and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a graphic design intern at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

Dodgeball Tournament

The Huntington High School chapter of the National French Honor Society is planning a dodgeball tournament for May 24 at 6 p.m. in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. Teams of six players are being sought. A fee of $3 per player is being charged. Sign-ups are ongoing at the school through May 10.

1946 Alum Passes Away

Mary Nicole (Annunziata) Auletta, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 1946 passed away in Tequesta, Florida late last month. She was 83.

During her years at Huntington High School, Ms. Annunziata (Mrs. Auletta's maiden name) was known as "Nicki." Her class was graduated during the school's 85th annual commencement, which was held in the high school auditorium on Tuesday, June 25, 1946 at 8:15 p.m. The high school was then located in the building on Main Street in what is now present day Huntington Town Hall.

The 1946 commencement included addresses by valedictorian Gerald Norman Shukow and salutatorian Jean Marie Wanser. Mr. Shukow's address was titled, "Ours is Tomorrow." Ms. Wanser's titled her speech, "The Hidden Soul of Harmony." Edwin Francis Bjoro, Jr., another leading student, also spoke on the "Development of Plastics."

Seniors were presented with their academic prizes and diplomas by Huntington School Board President Earl W. Chapple, Acting Superintendent John A. Matthews and Huntington High School Principal Robert L. Simpson.

The 1946 graduates exited the ceremony to John Philip Sousa's exhilarating march, "El Capitan," performed by the Huntington High School band.

Mrs. Auletta was born in Huntington to immigrant parents from Naples, Italy. She met her husband, Richard following World War II. She worked for Kemper Insurance in Florida for many years and later moved in Tequesta Terrace, an assisted living community, where she lived out her remaining years.

The Huntington alum enjoyed an active retirement, spending time outdoors, including Florida's beaches and visiting family members whenever she could. She took delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends called on the family at M.A. Connell Funeral Home this past Sunday. A funeral Mass was held at St. Patrick's Church on Monday.
