Heckscher Museum Displays Roxana Moreira's Art

Huntington High School senior Roxana Moreira is a talented artist. Go to the Heckscher Museum of Art between now and April 22 and see for yourself. The teenager has a piece on display in the Long Island's Best young artists show.
Ms. Moreira's artwork was among 81 pieces chosen for the show, which drew 300 entries from exceptional student-artists representing 48 public and private high schools.
The show bills itself as "the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their artwork in an art museum." A crowd of more than 300 jam-packed the opening reception and awards ceremony.
Participating artists were asked "to make connections between artwork on view in the museum and their own experiences." Students selected a professionally created piece of art from one of six Heckscher Museum exhibitions and used it as inspiration to produce an original work of art.
"I really admire strong, independent women, which is why I was drawn to the piece created by Ethel Camhi," Ms. Moreira said. "The position and facial gesture of the woman is serene yet defiant and exudes a sense of confidence. I wanted to convey this mood in my own work. Having worked for two years with various types of collage I was excited to digitally implement this traditional technique. Similar to Camhi's female mine has an air of revolution about her. I selected a crow to contrast the color and hope surrounding my heroine, essentially stating that for every step forward and triumph, that there looms a dark past or 'figure.'"
