Huntington High School junior Alexis Thompson enjoyed a career day, scoring seven goals and adding seven assists as the Blue Devil girls' lacrosse team topped Greenport/Southold/Mattituck, 22-6.

Junior Hannah Burnett also turned in an amazing day, with six goals and nine assists for a breathtaking 15 points. Senior Diana Harvey added five goals and freshman Alyssa Amorison had four goals and four assists.

Huntington came out strong, building a 13-5 lead over the first half of play. There was no let-up in the second frame as the Blue Devils outscored the home squad, 9-1.

Freshman goalie Anna Tesoriero made seven saves for Huntington before stepping aside for freshman Fiona Geier, who stopped a pair of shots.

Comsewogue Too Hot to Handle

The Huntington High School boys' lacrosse team lost a road game to Comsewogue, 15-3. The Warriors jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead and held an 8-2 halftime advantage. Comsewogue went on to outscore the Blue Devils in the second half, 7-1.

Pat Reilly, Josh Long and P.J. Beach scored for Huntington. T.J. Greenhill recorded 11 saves for the Blue Devils. Spencer Colwin stopped one shot.

Thomson Scored Six Times

Alexis Thompson notched nine points on six goals and three assists to lead the Huntington girls' lacrosse team past host Bellport, 18-5. The Blue Devils built an insurmountable 13-2 halftime edge.

Hannah Burnett had five goals and two assists, Alyssa Amorison contributed three goals and three assists and Stephan Rafuse added two goals and an assist. Mackenzie Maloney had a goal and an assist and Colleen Wright also scored for the Blue Devils.

Anna Tesoriero stopped seven shots for Huntington. Fiona Geier made five saves for the Blue Devils.

 

Six Blue Devils are All-League

The Huntington girls' winter track and field team finished third in the league championships under head coach Debra Cheskes. The squad earlier won the Grinch Games at Fordham University.

Hayley Drace (triple jump), Suzie Petryk (3000m run), Dania Merilan (300m run and 4x200m relay), Latoya Shand (4x200m relay), Samantha Glicker (4x200m relay) and Catherine Koumas (4x200m relay) each earned All-League honors.

The Blue Devils were captained by Lidia Aparicio, Jacqui Gomez-Campos, Katie Healy, Kerri-Ann Giambruno and Adelia Witt. The team featured 37 athletes.

Cheskes said her squad is more like a family than a team. "The bond these girls formed was outstanding," the coach said. "Their support for each other was evident to all. I'm proud of their accomplishments on the track, but blown away by their respect for each other as teammates."

Forster Leads Albany to NCAA Tournament

Former Huntington High School girls' basketball star Julie Forster helped lead the University at Albany women's basketball team to its first ever America East Conference title and 20 win season. The Great Danes qualified for the NCAA Division I tournament.

Albany topped the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in the conference title game, 69-61 before a crowd of 2,408. Forster pulled down 13 rebounds, blocked two shots, picked up three steals and two assists and scored four points in 39 minutes on the court.

Albany lost to Texas A&M in the NCAA tournament, 69-47. The Great Danes trailed at halftime, 30-26 before being swamped in the second half. Forster scored from the paint to tie the game at 17-17, but Albany just couldn't take control of the game.

The NCAA tournament game was played in College Station, Texas before a crowd of 6,407. Forster had eight points, 12 rebounds and a steal in 38 minutes. Largely due to Forster's efforts, the Great Danes out rebounded the defending national champions, 48-33. Albany finished the season with a 23-10 record.

Alum Scores Four Goals for Iona

Blue Devil alum Casey Scully scored four goals to help the Iona College women's lacrosse team beat host Niagara University last Saturday afternoon, 16-7.

Scully, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 2008, picked up an assist a few days earlier as Iona dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Fairfield, 12-7.

Hayes-Hurley Scores First Goal

Emma Hayes-Hurley is quickly making herself indispensable to the Binghamton University women's lacrosse team. The 2011 Huntington High School graduate scored her first college goal at the University of New Hampshire. The former Blue Devil great notched the goal at the 20:28 mark of the second half, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity.
