Washington School Recognizes Top March Students

Washington Primary School students love getting singled out for their good work and efforts. Who wouldn't? Watching the youngsters make their way down to the main office to pick up an award is a priceless sight. They stand erect and move along at what best can be described as a walk-jog. But, most strikingly apparent is the smile that invariably spreads across the face of each student.
A special program that debuted last year continues to inspire and motivate students on every grade level. The Washington Ways initiative focuses on recognizing and rewarding positive behavior while encouraging students to be safe, respectful and responsible.
Youngsters are given various colored tickets by teachers and support staff members for exemplary behavior. The tickets can be presented to students throughout the day.
White tickets are awarded weekly for good behaviors and actions in the classroom. White ticket winners are honored with special recognition in their classroom at the end of each week and their names are announced every Monday morning.
Red tickets are presented to individuals for notable good behavior outside of classrooms, including in hallways, buses, the playground and cafeteria, etc. At the end of the month, the student in each class with the greatest number of red tickets is recognized with a special certificate. Principal Marsha Neville announces the names of the honorees over Washington's public address system.
March's "Red Ticket" honorees included JaGueen Miller, Jose Villatoro, Jerry Chavez, Jocelyn Perdomo, Enoc Galeas, Leigh Hepworth, Vito Aloe, Abagail Baade, Chris Bonilla, Jorge Chabla, Jason Santos, Teddy Tilikakos, Jake Rivoir, Jackson Kanzer, Giulia Sabatino, Mackenzie Madison, R.J. Moreno, Mia Redick, Jackson Moreno-Mejia and Claudia Villatoro.
"Receiving a red ticket gives a student a wonderful feeling," Mrs. Neville said. "It recognizes their exceptional effort and motivates their classmates. It's fun to honor a different group of students each month."
Entire classes can earn blue tickets for positive group behavior out-of-the-classroom. Blue tickets are also awarded to the two classes within the building with the most tickets overall.
Washington's "Blue Ticket" classes for March included those of third grade teachers Jessica McVetty and Joanne Tures.
