Finley Girls' Volleyball Struggles
Whenever a team finishes a season winless it is a tough situation. The J. Taylor Finley Middle School girls' volleyball squad experienced such a dilemma when it closed the winter campaign with a record of 0-10.
Coached by Natalie Rubcewich, the Falcons were captained by Julia Macedonio, Sarah Fernandez and Emma Pipolo. "This was a great team and always stayed positive even though we lost every time," Rubcewich said.
Emma Petrizzi, Shannon Maloney and Fernandez were Finley's top players. The squad featured a mix of 23 seventh and eighth graders including a dozen first year players, who worked closely with the coach to improve their skills.
Rubcewich called Petrizzi "a great kid and athlete and a hard worker. She gives her all." Fernandez was an exceptional leader "who will go far in volleyball," the coach said. Maloney showed flashes of brilliance serving and with experience should become even more consistent.
Finley expects to be more competitive next season. "We will have 12 players returning and I expect to win many more games," Rubcewich said.
