Blue Devil Marching Band
Ready for Action
If it could overcome an earthquake and a hurricane in the same week, is there anything the Huntington High School Blue Devil marching band can't do? A successful week-long band camp culminated with a parent's reception last Saturday as band members impressed a crowd of about 200 family members and friends.
This year's field show is called "X!" and band directors Jason Giachetti and Brian Stellato are driving home the six movements associated with it: "X-Clamation, X-Celeration, X-Haustion, X-Aggeration, X-Otic, X-Plosion." Those movements are emblazoned on the band's official 2011 t-shirt, which also contains the Blue Devils' fall schedule.
The hard working marching band numbers about 115 members. The group participated in a four-day mini camp two weeks ago before embracing the challenge of 12 hour days, Monday through Friday last week in the annual full-fledged summer camp.
A parent's reception was held on Saturday as Hurricane Irene approached. Rain forced those festivities into the gym at J. Taylor Finley Middle School, the site of this year's camp. Earlier in the week a 5.8 magnitude earthquake rumbled through New York.
"We fought through an earthquake and a hurricane," Mr. Giachetti joked. "In spite of these obstacles, this was one of the most successful band camps we ever had. This is one of, if not the most respectful, hardworking and professional groups we've ever had."
The band welcomed new Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky to the district and presented him with a shirt during the parent's reception, which saw the Blue Devils perform and compete in a modified march-off competition. Principal Carmela Leonardi and Huntington School Board members Adam Spector and Emily Rogan were also on hand for the midday festivities.
The band will open its competitive schedule on Sunday, Sept. 18 at Brentwood. The Blue Devils will host a home show on Sunday, Oct. 16. The event will include many of the top bands from the metropolitan area. The fall season culminates on Oct. 30 at the New York State Field Band Conference championships at the Carrier Dome on the Syracuse University campus.
The Blue Devil marching band, which is racing toward its 80th anniversary in a few years, has a new website (http://hbdmb.org/) where visitors can get information, schedules, directions, contact info, forms, band news, visit historical archives, watch past videos, check out photos, get directions or view some very funny videos.
