Big Turnout for Fall Sports at Huntington High School

The fall season has seen a large turnout for the athletic teams Huntington High School. There are 322 students participating on 17 varsity and junior varsity squads, according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy and sent to School Board members.

The seven boys' teams have 153 participants and the 10 girls' squads are filled with 169 athletes. Junior varsity football has the largest roster with 44 players. Varsity football has 34 players. The two high school boys' soccer teams have a combined 42 players while the girls' soccer teams are filled with 35 athletes.

The varsity and junior varsity girls' tennis teams have a combined 26 players. There are nine boys' golf team members. Girls' swimming has 27 student-athletes participating, including several from the middle school level. The team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School was eliminated two years ago for budgetary reasons.

The high school field hockey program has 41 players on the two teams' rosters. The girls' varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams are filled with 24 athletes. The varsity boys' cross country team has a roster of nine while the girls' cross country squad has 16 runners. The boys' varsity volleyball teams 15 players.

With so many teams and students participating, space continues to be at a premium both indoors and outdoors. The athletic department has moved some teams off-site for practices and games.
