Blue Devil Sports News

The Huntington boys' lacrosse team lost a hotly contested game to Shoreham-Wading River, 11-10. The Blue Devils trailed after one quarter, 3-1 and were down at halftime, 5-4. But, they rallied to tie the game by the end of the third quarter, 7-7.

SWR scored what proved to be the game winner with 1:24 remaining in the game. Huntington didn't go down easily, however, as the Blue Devils managed to get off two blistering shots in the final 20 seconds that were stopped by SWR goalie Tyler Lutjen, who made eight saves overall.

The Blue Devils were led by Jim Roselle's three goals. Nick Saputo (2g, 1a), Will Coffey (2g), Dan Plant (2g), Jack Castelli (1g) and Duncan Murchison (1a) contributed to the offense. John McGrath recorded nine saves in the net for Huntington.

The Lax Out Cancer game was a successful fundraiser, raking in more than $20,000 for a pair of lacrosse players and their families fighting the dreaded disease.

Antonucci Scores!

Corina Antonucci scored on a fielder's choice to give the Huntington girls' softball team a 5-4 lead and the victory over visiting Westhampton Beach.

Antonucci, a senior, scored when eighth grader Tara Byrnes hit into a fielder's choice in the fifth inning of the game. Junior Jackie Herrington banged out three hits and also fanned 10 batters en route to picking up the complete game victory.

What a Record

J. Taylor Finley Middle School boys' lacrosse coach Rick Eriksen is closing out his teaching and coaching career this spring. The Falcons won their first four games to boost Eriksen's career record over 22 seasons to 174-17-3. It's a remarkable mark for the soft-spoken coach.

Burnett Can't Be Stopped

Can anyone stop Hannah Burnett? The Huntington High School sophomore has an exceptionally prolific scorer this spring, helping to lead the Blue Devil girls' lacrosse team into the top tier of Suffolk Division II.

Burnett scored five goals against Bayport-Blue Point. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Huntington fell, 19-12. Emma Hayes-Hurley played well, too, scoring three goals and adding two assists. Alexis Thompson and Emilie Pugliese each notched two goals and an assist, respectively. Sarah Ehrman (two assists) and Colleen Wright (one assist) also contributed to the cause.

Huntington's eighth grade goalie, Anna Tesoriero made 13 saves. Samantha Mohr added three saves for the Blue Devils.

BBP led 10-7 at halftime and Huntington never was quite able to make up its deficit.

Plant Leads the Way

Dan Plant scored three goals to lead the Huntington boys' lacrosse team over visiting Babylon, 15-4. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 7-1 first quarter advantage and led 10-2 at halftime.

Nick Saputo had two goals and an assist and Jack Castelli added two goals. The Blue Devil machine was also powered by Will Coffey (1g, 2a), Jim Roselle (1g, 1a), P.J. White (1g, 1a), Pat O'Brien (1g, 1a), Brad Dwyer (1g), Duncan Murchison (1g), Conor Reilly (1g), Chris Napolitano (1g) and Calvin Bollar (1a).

Huntington goalie John McGrath was a model of efficiency, stopping 10 shots. Sophomore T.J. Greenhill and junior Mike Rasco recorded one save each, respectively, in goal.

Casey Scully at Iona

Huntington High School 2008 alum and current Iona College women's lacrosse player Casey Scully earned her third varsity letter this spring after scoring 12 goals and adding six assists for the Gaels.

Scully is a 5'6 midfielder for Iona. This year, she played in all 17 games, starting 16 of them. She took 36 shots, 22 on goal, picked up 28 ground balls, won 25 draw controls and caused 12 turnovers. The Gaels finished the season with a 5-12 mark after losing to Fairfield in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semi-finals, 10-8.

During her Iona career, Scully has played in 48 games, scored 68 goals, contributed 17 assists, took 160 shots (115 on goal), scooped up 85 ground balls, won 69 draw controls and caused 34 turnovers.

At Huntington, Scully starred on the soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. She captained all three sports as a senior. She was named All-County in lacrosse, All-Conference in soccer and All-League in basketball.
