Huntington's Science Bowl Team
is Tough

Huntington High School's team was a worthy competitor at the regional Science Bowl competition at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory.
This marked the third year that Huntington has sent a squad to the fast-paced question-and-answer contest that tests participant's knowledge of math, earth science, energy, physics, chemistry, general science and biology.
The competition drew entries from 20 strong high school teams. "We could only enter five of our students in the competition although we have many more that are on the team," said Huntington science teacher Lori Kenny who coaches the group along with faculty colleague Dame Forbes. "It's quite competitive to get on the final team and with so many hopefuls we have many strong years ahead of us."
Huntington's participants included, Juilanna Coraor, Carolyn Fante, Alexandria Martinolich, Matthew Petryk and Laura Zenzerovich. The remainder of the team consists of Kaja Coraor, Marc Feldman, Andrew Ku, Morgan Mars, Brian McConnell, Ari Moskowitz, Ben Nikodem, Summer Rudish and Jeffrey Sun.
"Unfortunately the last team beat us on the final question of our last round and knocked our team out," Mrs. Kenny said. "The interest and practice for this event has more than doubled in the school and the excitement continues to grow."
The Brookhaven competition was one of 70 regional Science Bowl contests around the country. The competition is coordinated by the Department of Energy's Office of Science and dates to 1991. Since then more than 150,000 students have participated in the contest.
"The students did an excellent job in both the practice and the competition," Mrs. Kenny said. "Our team will forge on and become better and better until we reach our goal: first place."
The Long Island regional competition was sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates and the Long Island Science Center. Mrs. Kenny and Mrs. Forbes continue to look for more students to get involved. "We love working with the kids all year round," Mrs. Kenny said.
Students interested in joining Huntington's Science Bowl team should see Mrs. Kenny or Mrs. Forbes for more information or to learn details of the group's practice locations and times.
