Finley Students Explore Careers

It isn't too early for a group of J. Taylor Finley Middle School seventh graders to begin the process of career exploration. The students are using Guidance Direct, an interactive program that school has made available.

The seventh graders were able to access Guidance Direct through seventh grade guidance counselor Cathy Cain. Participants received access codes and log-in information so that they could create their own accounts.

Seventh grade students were asked to take the 'interest profiler,' a series of 150 questions from Holland's Theory of Personality Types. Once students answered all the questions, they received a generated list of jobs/careers. Careers identified ranged from those that required a lot of education (such as a high school diploma, college degree, and/or graduate degree) to those that required little or no education.

"Students have the ability to log into their accounts any time to further explore or conduct additional searches, as well as the option to retake the interest profiler," Mrs. Cain said. "They also have the ability to conduct a career search that links their skills and interests to future planning at the college level. In fact, some students have already begun to research salary ranges for various careers, as well as how to build a resume."

Finley faculty members believe it's never too early for students to think about their future. Guidance Direct fits nicely into that philosophy. "This valuable tool is available to all students at the middle school," Mrs. Cain said.
