Ireland Comes to Life at
Jefferson School

St. Patrick's Day took on new meaning at Jefferson Primary School for second graders in teacher's Pattye Sweeney and Sharon Weider's class.

The youngsters completed a country report on Ireland. They were excited to learn about the Emerald Isle, a country that Mrs. Weider visited during the recent winter recess.

Students wrote about the land, Irish food, sports and games, holidays and celebrations. They listened to samples of Gaelic, the language of the Irish. The class was fascinated to learn that Irish Gaelic has many sounds not found in American English. The alphabet has 18 of the 26 letters in the English alphabet.

The youngsters completed their reports just in time for St. Patrick's Day. Many class members came dressed in green for the day or wearing hats or other trinkets. The class assignment helped them develop a greater appreciation for the special day.
