Exhibit Celebrates Black History Month

The main lobby at Huntington High School has been the scene of an attractive and informative display of items for the past six weeks. The showcase has celebrated the contributions and culture of leading people of color in the United States.

The Rev. Bernadette Watkins of Huntington Outreach Ministries created the exhibit. The items are from her personal collection and were specifically selected for display at the school. "It's important that we raise the profile of Black History Month and use it to teach the young people about an important part of their heritage," she said.

The exhibit features historic stamps, photos, books, arts and crafts, posters, jewelry, figurines, carvings, compact discs, masks, dolls and statues. Individual profiles and photos of great Americans of color have been affixed to the wood pillars in the lobby. There are stories about local slaves and assorted historical information sprinkled throughout the exhibit.

The exhibit was enhanced by short daily readings by Principal Carmela Leonardi each morning over the school's public address system each morning. The messages celebrated a particular aspect of the African American experience in this country.

"We shared a lot of information about prominent African American politicians, scientist, educators and artists," Dr. Leonardi said. "The display was the most inclusive yet, with informational passages as well as artifacts and artistic pieces. We are very grateful to Rev. Watkins for taking the time to do this for our students each year."

Rev. Watkins said she also provided the high school with a packet of written materials meant to inform, educate and stimulate discussions. "Next year we hope to have a formal celebration with speakers," she said. "We haven't had one in many years. We need to do that."
