Kindergarteners Abuzz at
Flower Hill School

March kicked off with a fun celebration for Flower Hill School kindergarten students, who recognized Dr. Seuss' 107th birthday with a variety of learning activities.

Erika Sabogal, a Flower Hill dual language program teacher, said the kindergarten classes "were abuzz with excitement." Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, authored a series of beloved children's books. Today, nearly 20 years after his death, the wr
iter's work is still as popular as ever.

"Students created Dr. Seuss hats with rhyming words, which helped reinforce phonics principles and make connections with previously heard rhymes from his famous books," Ms. Sabogal said. The kindergarteners also participated in Seuss-like themed learning centers and created "wacky" sentences based on the Dr. Seuss book, Hop on Pop.

Flower Hill's celebration will continue with the school's annual Parents as Reading Partners program, which runs through March 18. Students will record their time spent reading at home in logs, participate in raffles and a book swap. There will also be grade level prizes and a special assembly will be held to recognize the youngsters who have read the most.

"Classes were given a jungle animal mascot that goes with this year's theme to identify with and reach for the top with minutes read," Ms. Sabogal said. "This is a great opportunity to continue fostering a love of books and the journey they can take you to, without leaving your chair."
