Blue Devils Compile Impressive Stats
The Huntington girls' basketball team responded to rookie head coach Mike Kaplan in splendid fashion this winter, winning nine games in Suffolk's rugged League IV and qualifying for the Class AA playoffs.
The Blue Devils compiled some impressive stats along the way. The team benefitted from above average defense, sharp outside shooting, strong play under the boards and an overall unselfish philosophy.
Jackie Waldron led Huntington in scoring, averaging 15.7 points per game. The senior was 11th in Suffolk with 31 three-pointers. She even averaged 10 rebounds per game.
Eighth grader Heather Forster averaged eight points, 12 rebounds and three blocks per game en route to All-League honors. Senior Emma Hayes-Hurley averaged six points, eight assists and three steals per game. Katie Nugent earned the League IV Rookie of the Year Award.
The Blue Devils also fielded one of the top ten defenses in the county. Huntington surrendered an average of just 39 points per game.
Kaplan is looking forward to next year despite losing a set of talented seniors. The Blue Devils will return 11 players, including four current eighth graders, one freshman, four sophomores and two juniors.
