Woodhull School Receives Town Beautification Award

The Town of Huntington's Beautification Council presented a first place award in its annual competition to Woodhull Intermediate School during a recent ceremony at Town Hall. Woodhull was honored for its recycling and art in the garden project.

"There were three parts to our contributions to the award," Woodhull art teacher Todd Hiscox said. The project began with a fifth grader Afroditi Mountanos, who initiated a "four seasons" mural in the fifth grade wing."

Ms. Mountanos wrote a short missive to Woodhull Principal Mary Stokkers requesting an opportunity "to represent the beauty of the four seasons with two murals on either side of the first courtyard," Mr. Hiscox said. Woodhull art teacher Amanda Marino helped facilitate a group of fifth graders who painted the murals for the four seasons display.

Sixth graders Caroline Tonks and Celine Palermo initiated an endangered species mural project in the sixth grade wing. "They liked what they saw in the fifth grade wing and proceeded to write Ms.Stokkers a letter with their intentions to create four murals representing endangered species and their different habitats," explained Mr. Hiscox, who facilitate a sixth grade group that painted murals.

Mr. Hiscox's sixth grade art club spent time working on several projects to beautify one of Woodhull's courtyards. They have refurbished old benches by dismantling them, painted the pieces with bright and colorful blends and reassembled them.

The club has also painted thinly sliced tree stumps provided by Mrs. Stokkers. "These will be used as pavers that will create a pathway in the courtyard," Mr. Hiscox explained. "They have painted them in a variety of school related themes."
