Meghan Rowland Wins Pius Scholarship

Meghan Rowland is one of the mainstays of the Blue Devil marching band. Well, on second thought, let's amend that first statement. The senior is one of the mainstays of Huntington High School and the Class of 2011.

The teenager is a proverbial rock, steady, responsible, organized, hardworking, bright, well-spoken, funny and loyal to her friends and family. She's headed to the University of Delaware where she will participate in the honors program. Delaware ultimately won out over Villanova University.

At Huntington's senior academic awards night earlier this month, Ms. Rowland was presented with the $2,000 Donald A. Pius Scholarship Award.

Morgan Pius, the daughter of the award's founder, made the presentation before a crowd of about 300 in the Huntington High School auditorium. "Tonight's recipient is in the National, English, Science, Mathematics and Spanish honor societies," Ms. Pius told the crowd about Ms. Rowland. "She is on the high honor roll and received other academic awards."

Ms. Rowland has also volunteered as a counselor in training with the town's playground program, participated in various charitable community fundraisers and has been a key organizer of various honor society activities.

The honors program at Delaware is known to be quite demanding, but Huntington's teachers say Ms. Rowland is more than up to the challenge.
