Huntington PTA Council President Bari Fehrs presented Huntington High School senior Dante Allen with a $500 scholarship at the 43rd annual Blue Devil senior athletic awards banquet held earlier this month.
Mr. Allen is headed to Stony Brook University on a football scholarship. The PTA Council scholarship was funded by monies raised at a refreshment stand the organization erected at the Special Olympics held at Huntington High School this spring.
"Dante is a hardworking young man with a very bright future," Mrs. Fehrs said. "He has a great support network with an entire community behind him. We all wish him well at Stony Brook."
Waldron's Summer Plans
Blue Devil basketball star Jackie Waldron is getting ready to play at Catholic University of America next winter. The Huntington High School senior plans on working out with two different basketball trainers this summer to get in tip-top physical condition and to sharpen her skills. She'll be in one of three different gyms an awful lot.
"This summer will be a busy one," Waldron said. "I will be working the summer camps at Northsport Athletic Facility. I will also be lifeguarding private parties. I look forward to spending a lot of time with my family and friends before I leave for school. I think this will be a great summer before college."
A.D. Thanks School Board
Georgia D. McCarthy, the Huntington School District's director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics thanked "the board of education and the administration for their continued support of the athletic program," during the 43rd annual Blue Devil senior athletic awards banquet earlier this month.
"Your support keeps a wide variety of student-selected opportunities available for all and these are a vital part of their education," Mrs. McCarthy said.
JV Softball's Best
The Huntington High School junior varsity softball team was coached by Todd Jamison and captained by junior Kristina Salese, sophomore Alexa Sperduto and freshman Beth Coneys.
The top players on the squad included Sperduto, Coneys, sophomore Melissa Cohen and eighth graders Megan Boyce, Kelly Beatty and Marygrace Trousdell.
Finley Softball Shorthanded
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School softball team went 1-9 this spring under veteran coach Nancy Conlon. The Falcons were hit hard with the loss of three top players, who were elevated to the junior varsity team.
The 22-player Falcon squad was captained by Kaitlin Dayton, Nicole Russo and Kaitlin Wascher.
Blue Devil JV Boys' Tennis Strong
The Huntington High School junior varsity boys' tennis team compiled a 9-3 mark this spring under head coach Robert Gilmor III.
The 16-player squad included Lucas Alexander, Jesse Annunziata, Alexander Castillo, Tyler Cook, Joseph Corcoran, Marc Feldman, Alexander Jamison, Ryan Newell, Michael Piazza, Matthew Sherman, Anthony Spinthourakis, Victor Tellez, Alex Ulloa, Samuel Yanuck, Justin Loturco and Cooper Wakhale.
