Creative Writing Class Visits
Jefferson School

Aimee Antorino and 17 students in the Huntington High School English teacher's creative writing class walked down Oakwood Road to Jefferson School for a very special visit.

The group, which included sophomores, juniors and trekked to Jefferson with the goal of bringing their illustrated children's stories to life in the elementary school classrooms. The high school students had penned and illustrated the stories with a great deal of thought and they were anxious to share their work.

"Many elementary classes took part in the experience," said Molly Prep, a member of the group. Students spanning a wide range of ages set aside a portion of their class time to see and hear what the "big kids" had written and drawn.

Jefferson Principal Margaret Evers welcomed the visitors "with open arms," Ms. Prep said. Students in second grade teacher Jennie Higgins' class were in the process of writing and drawing their own books at the time of the visit. "Many of these young students seemed both impressed and inspired by the readings of the creative writing students," Ms. Prep said.

Students in first grade teacher Kathy Kraus' class asked plenty of questions after the story readings. The youngsters were able to incorporate their class lesson into the visit, "finding a story's problem, as well," Ms. Prep said.

The teenage creative writing students found the trip to be both cute and fun. "Many felt a sense of pride being able to share their hard work with a very appreciative audience," Ms. Prep said. "The one thing students said they would have changed was the weather, as it was hot both inside and outside of the building. The overall experience, despite the heat, seems to have been considered pleasant by all."
