Huntington Senior Earns
Top Science Award
Michael O'Conner, a senior who is headed to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh to study mechanical engineering, was honored as Huntington High School's top science student at the annual Suffolk County Science Teachers' Assn. Dinner.
Huntington High School's science teachers collectively selected Mr. O'Connor as the school's 2011 recipient. "He was chosen because he represents the highest standards of academic excellence and has an intrinsic interest in the sciences," teacher Dame Forbes said.
Mr. O'Connor was presented with a plaque commemorating his achievement. His name will also be engraved a special plaque kept on permanent display at Huntington High School.
An Eagle Scout with four Palm awards, the teenager has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction and as a New York Scholar Athlete. He's a member of several high school honor societies.
Mrs. Forbes was Mr. O'Connor's invited guest at the SCSTA dinner and presented the senior with his award. "Michael O'Conner is a gifted, talented and kindhearted young man," Mrs. Forbes said. "He is a natural leader and sure to make waves in his chosen field."
