Spanish Honor Society Exudes Energy
Michelle Byrne is not one to sit idly by when there's work to do. So the Galápagos chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society at Huntington high School had a busy year.
Ms. Byrne, who will attend Cornell University in the fall, served as president of the organization, which had an active membership that tackled numerous projects and initiatives. Teacher Mercy Peña was the group's faculty advisor and she worked closely with the association's officers with impressive results.
The salutatorian of Huntington's Class of 2011, Ms. Byrne is a leader in every sense of the word. She's a hard worker, too. She didn't hesitate to dive into a challenging agenda, backed by the society's energetic members, including Vice-President Carrie Fante, who was valedictorian of the Class of 2011.
The Galápagos chapter's accomplishments included:
• Tutored foreign language, ESL and special education students.
• Awarded a $400 scholarship to Meleika Amos, who is not a member of the society but was honored for overcoming a variety of obstacles in her young life.
• Raised money to benefit the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in support of campaign by Rohan Murphy, a Para Olympian and motivational speaker who visited Huntington High School earlier this year.
• Collected holiday gifts for the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative and needy Huntington High School students.
