Huntington PTSA Honors Four Seniors

The Huntington High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association presented generous scholarships to four graduating seniors who have distinguished themselves in a variety of ways over the past four years.

PTSA co-President Maryann Smith presented the scholarships and spoke glowingly about each of the seniors. The four teenagers are role models for their classmates and well-respected by Huntington's faculty members. The $500 scholarships can be used to defray the cost of college tuition.

The recipients include Mercury Caronia, Danielle Cerezo, Phoebe Curran and Olivia Weller. "These scholarships were based on individual improvements throughout their high school years and for overcoming adversity and community service," said Marilyn Maggio, co-president of the PTSA.

Ms. Weller is one of Huntington's top students. She will attend Cornell University in the fall and plans to study communications, with a concentration in business and politics. Her reputation for being a hard worker was cemented over the past four years. Ms. Weller took a leading role in the high school student government and was an exceptional Blue Devil fencer.

Ms. Curran is headed to Boston University to study communications. She's known for her enthusiasm and zest for life, qualities that have often proved to be contagious to those around her. The teenager was one of the top Blue Devil swimmers and was a newscaster for the video club's in-school closed circuit broadcasts.

SUNY Geneseo is getting one of Huntington's most impressive scholars in Ms. Cerezo, who intends to study biology. An outgoing, articulate and exceedingly happy teenager, she participated in numerous high school clubs, including Grandfriends, A World of Difference and the Key club and was a student director for the drama club's fall and spring productions.

Mr. Caronia dabbled in a little of everything in high school and enjoyed four years of interesting experiences. While the teenager likes to share a laugh with his friends, he's certainly no intellectual lightweight. The new alum is headed to Stony Brook University in the fall.

Each of the four students demonstrated good citizenship and character and a strong academic work ethic. The PTSA raised the money for the scholarship awards over the past year through various initiatives.

"It's wonderful that the Huntington High School PTSA has honored these fine students with such generous scholarships," Superintendent James W. Polansky said.
