Huntington Alum on All-Academic Team
Joe Brown, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 2009, has earned a spot on the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference All-Academic Team. The Blue Devil alum plays for SUNY Maritime College in Throggs Neck.
The criteria for receiving the honor are that the student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing, have participated a minimum two years with the team and achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.
This season Mr. Brown record three tackles, including one solo and two assists along with a "quarterback hurry." Academically, he is majoring in marine operations.
At Huntington, Mr. Brown was a member of the Nathan Hale chapter of the National Honor Society. He played on the football, winter track and lacrosse squads and was the male recipient of the Booster Club's Sportsmanship Award.
The 5'8, 195 lb. Huntington grad wears uniform No. 61 and plays defensive tackle for Martime's football team. He earned MVP and offensive and defensive lineman awards with the Blue Devils and built strong relationships with his coaches, especially Ron Wilson.
Mr. Brown is a midshipman in the Navy ROTC at Maritime. He has been taking naval science courses, attending lectures given by a variety of Navy personnel, participating in a naval training lab and taking part in morning PT. Upon graduation, he will be commissioned as an ensign in the US Navy and serve a minimum of five years.
At Maritime, Mr. Brown is participating in the "regiment," a military structured lifestyle that is helps prepare cadets for life as an officer aboard a merchant ship in the maritime industry.
Mr. Brown has made the Dean's List, been a squad leader for regimental indoctrination and earned a spot on the Academic Admiral's List. He will be pursuing a USCG Deck License.
