Trustees Approve Long-Term Substitutes

Two new long-term substitute special education teachers were approved by Huntington School Board members at their meeting last week.

Karen Gandley will be filling in at Flower Hill School through the end of the June. She earned a bachelor's degree in child study at St. Joseph's College in December 2007 and obtained a master's degree in severe and multiple disabilities at Columbia University's Teachers College last June.

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Gandley has worked as a substitute teacher and first grade leave replacement teacher at Meadow School in Baldwin, as a leave replacement inclusion teacher at Francis Wilson School in Rockville Centre and as a special education teacher assistant at William S. Covert School, also in Rockville Centre.

Christina Collins will be teaching at Jefferson School through the end of the school year. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education at SUNY College at Oneonta in May 1991 and obtained a master's degree in special education at Long Island University-C.W. Post College in January 1993.

At the time of her appointment in Huntington, Ms. Collins was working as a nursery school and pre-kindergarten teacher at Presbyterian Community School in Massapequa. She has also worked as a special education teacher in the Islip School District from October 1993 to June 2003.

District officials interviewed 17 candidates before making recommendations to trustees.
