Sports Participation Rises

More students are participating in the athletic program this winter at Huntington High School than last year at this time, according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy.

There are 263 students split among 11 teams. The boys' winter track and field team has a roster of 55. The girls' winter track squad has 37 members. The girls' fencing team has a roster of 34. There are 29 athletes on the boys' swimming and diving team. The varsity/junior varsity wrestling and boys' fencing teams each have 27 members. The varsity boys' and girls' basketball teams each have 14 players. JV boys' basketball has a 17-man roster. The JV girls' basketball team features nine players. The participants include 169 boys and 94 girls.

Last winter there were 246 high school students participating on 11 separate teams. A year earlier, the Blue Devil winter program had 224 high school students participating on 12 teams. In 2007/08 there were 243 athletes on 13 teams. (The JV cheerleading squad was eliminated for the 2008/09 school year as a result of budget cutbacks and varsity cheerleading was cut for last year.)
