Initiatives Underway for Potter Scholarship Fund

Colleagues and students of beloved late Huntington High School art teacher Robert Potter have mobilized and are working on several initiatives to raise money for a scholarship fund that will benefit the fallen faculty member's daughter, Isabel.

A student council sponsored dance last Saturday night in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium raised hundreds of dollars. The high school video club is selling DVDs of the recent Robert Potter memorial celebration for $10. The DVD was recorded at the touching event on January 13. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to Isabel Potter's College Fund. Contact teacher and video club advisor Heather Swan at hswan@hufsd.edu to place an order.

The art honor society is selling colorful INSPIREU t-shirts for $10. Proceeds from the sale will be split between the Potter Scholarship Fund and scholarships given out annually to senior art students. T-shirts can be ordered by calling the high school fine and performing arts office at 673-2106.

Mr. Potter's car featured a license plate emblazoned with the term, INSPIREU. Joan Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts, said it summarizes "the single most important reason why anyone teaches. This was the message that Robert Potter chose for his license plate."At the January 13 memorial celebration, dozens of INSPUREU t-shirts were sold and worn by teachers and students.

Mr. Potter passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, November 22, much to the shock of students, colleagues and the rest of the school community. He taught ceramics (pottery) and sculpture at Huntington High School since 2006 after a major career change.

To make an outright donation to the Potter college fund, make checks payable to: "Huntington Art Honor Society Potter Scholarship Fund" and either drop them off in the main office during regular school hours or mail them to Kristin Singer or Joan Fretz at Huntington High School, Oakwood & McKay Roads, Huntington, New York 11743.
