Finley Field Hockey Wins Big Game

The last game of the season was the J. Taylor Finley Middle School field hockey team's finest moment. The Falcons topped cross-town rival Stimson, 3-1 and closed out the fall campaign with a 5-3-2 mark.

Finley was captained by Meghan Plant, Kelly Palladino and Katie Keys. Nancy Conlon coached the 30-player team. The final contest saw the Falcons finally "playing as a team," Conlon said, and the results were impressive.

Conlon pointed to Keys, Sarah Fernandez and Julia Macedonio at the top Falcon players. Keys, an eighth grade inner, scored five goals and displayed "nice offensive skills, including dribbling and shooting," the coach said.

Fernandez, an eighth grade center halfback, "could drive the ball the length of the field," Conlon said. "Offensive and defensively she's a great player." Macedonio, the team's strong eighth grade goalie, was exceptional in stopping 27 shots.

With 18 current seventh graders eligible to return to the team as eighth graders next fall Finley's immediate future appears secure. "Hopefully, the seventh graders will try out again," Conlon said. "They work hard and have fun."
