Blue Devil Girls' Winter Track
Offers Glimpse

Just how good is the Huntington High School girls' winter track and field team? It's much too early in the season to know the answer to that question, but the Blue Devils offered a glimpse of what they might be capable of accomplishing at their first meet last weekend.

In Huntington's first appearance on a track this season senior captain Jaqui Gomez-Campos placed fourth in the 55m high hurdles and Naomi Media ran a personal best to finish ninth in the 55m high hurdles. In the 3000m run, Celine Takekoshi turned in a solid effort to place eighth.

Returning All County runner Dania Merilan started off her senior year by winning the 300m dash and finishing fourth in the 55m dash. Maia Cadle-Hinton captured third in the shot put. "Maia has her eye on the school record in the shot and is working hard to claim her spot in the record books," said Debra Cheskes, Huntington's head coach.

Blue Devil runners dominated the 600M dash. Alex Koumas won the event as Katie Healy and Morgan Mars crossed the line third and fifth, respectively. "It was pure magic to watch these three run together and control the race," Cheskes said. In a later heat in the same event, Suzie Petryk and Adeila Witt finished ninth and tenth, respectively. Petryk was also fourth in the 1500m run.

In the 1000m run Megan Healy was outstanding in an eighth place performance. Latoya Shand soared in the long jump and finished sixth. The 4 x 400 relay of Katie Healy, Morgan Mars, Megan Healy and Kerri-Ann Giambruno placed second. Also placing second was the 4 x 200 relay of Latoya Shand, Catherine Koumas, Ally Berwick and Samantha Glicker. Hayley Drace was eighth in the triple jump.

"This meet more that exceeded my expectations," Cheskes said. "I knew there was an abundance of talent from the beginning of the season. Now let's see where it can take us."
