Retired Science Teacher Passes Away
Lewis A. Travis, a retired Huntington School District teacher passed away on November 30. He was 91 years old.
Mr. Travis served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46. He began teaching sixth grade at Roosevelt Elementary School in September 1947. Roosevelt was located on School Street in Huntington Station near the intersection with Lowndes Avenue. The three acre property that Roosevelt was sited on is now part of a larger parcel on which Jack Abrams School sits. Roosevelt was located in the southeast section of the Jack Abrams School property.
In September 1957, Mr. Travis moved to Robert K. Toaz Junior High School, where he taught seventh and eighth grade science. In September 1962 he became department chair and assumed responsibility for audio-visual services. When Toaz closed in June 1982, Mr. Travis moved over to J. Taylor Finley Junior High School, where he continued teaching until he retired in June 1985.
Colleagues recall that late in his career at Finley, Mr. Travis could still be found walking through the halls at a very fast clip, papers in hand. He always wore dress pants, along with a jacket and tie. He was known as "all business" in the classroom, but had a sharp wit and a fine sense of humor.
Mr. Travis earned an undergraduate in education at Potsdam College in June 1943 and a master's degree in elementary administration and supervision at New York University in June 1951.
The retired Huntington teacher leaves behind his wife Marjorie, daughters Barbara and Karen and son Lewis, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visiting and a memorial service was held at Brueggemann Funeral Home in East Northport. In lieu of flowers, it was suggested that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Assn.
