Huntington Youth Writes Kicks-Off
Most young people enjoy a good contest and the 13th annual Huntington Youth Writes is definitely that, and more. The competition is open to students across the town enrolled in grades 4-12. The Huntington School District is looking for its students to be strong contenders for contest awards.
"In its 13 year history this contest has attracted more than 11,000 entries and presented over $20,000 in awards to nearly 375 young people," said Valerie E. Drakos, director of Project Excel. Many of the honorees have been Huntington School District students.
This year's contest will include over $2,000 in cash prizes. The deadline for entries is Friday, February 17 at 5 p.m. There are separate divisions for grades 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Categories include poetry, short story and essay. Students must submit their own original work.
All submissions must be in English. Collaborative projects will not be accepted. Poems cannot exceed 60 lines. Essays and short stories cannot exceed 3,000 words. Winning entries will be published in a journal.
Entry forms are posted on the Huntington School District's website at www.hufsd.edu. Forms are also available at the Huntington Public Library and the Town of Huntington Youth Bureau at the Village Green Center (423 Park Avenue, Huntington) in room 200.
