At the Top of Mount Skills

The "Race to the Top of Mount Skills" at Woodhull Intermediate School was often just as competitive as any athletic game and frequently just as much fun.
Woodhull reading teachers Karen Swanson, Dorene Karivalis and Marianne Fiordalisi developed the academic competition to practice and promote English Language Arts skills. For each of six weeks, participants focused on a particular skill.
Teams of students vied against one another on Monday mornings by logging onto Survey Monkey and answering questions similar to the ones the youngsters will find on the state ELA test. Students were quizzed on figurative language, the use context clues, making inferences, determining main ideas, facts and opinions and cause and effect. Each of the teams won at least one of the week's during the competition's run.
"The Mount Skills contest was a combined effort among all Woodhull staff and students," Ms. Karivalis said. "The Woodhull reading department thanks all of the teachers for helping to ensure that each skill was covered! Their dedication to the students at Woodhull made it possible for each student to take their winning place at the top of Mount Skills!"
