Long Island's Best Taps
Two Huntington Artists

The Huntington High School art program has gained a sterling reputation over the years. It has garnered respect throughout the region and nation, and even reached into Europe, where some graduates have gone to study.

At the Heckscher Museum's 15th Annual Long Island's Best show, Huntington students Roxana Moreira and Tyler Moore where among a select group of about six dozen teenagers from Nassau and Suffolk to have their works chosen for display at this year's exhibition. Ms. Moreira (Advanced Computer Graphics) and Mr. Moore (AP Studio Art 2D-Design Portfolio) are enrolled in classes taught by Kasmira Mohanty.

The art work of more than 200 gifted students from 52 Long Island high schools was nominated for the show, which will run through April 24. It marks the fourth such exhibit after extensive renovations to the 90-year old facility were completed in 2008. Participating student-artists were honored at a two-hour opening reception and award presentation that drew a capacity crowd. Ms. Moreira received an honorable mention award for her work.

"The Heckscher Museum is one of the region's premier galleries, so we are very proud to have the work of our artists selected for display at the Long Island's Best show," Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.

The show is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that provides participants with an opportunity to display their work in a museum. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the show this year, a special alumni section was created. The work of Huntington graduates Samantha Hofsiss (2008) and Zach Teplin (2010) was included in the exhibit. Ms. Hofsiss dedicated her piece to Robert Potter, her Huntington art teacher who passed away last fall.

According to its website, The Heckscher Museum of Art was founded in 1920 by industrialist August Heckscher. The collection is devoted to 19th and 20th century European and American art. In addition, the Museum owns and maintains the Dove/Torr cottage, the home of famed American artist Arthur Dove and his artist-wife Helen Torr.
