Huntington School Briefs

At their meeting this past Monday evening, Huntington School Board members approved a child care related leave of absence for Washington Primary School special education teacher Debra Lawrence, effective March 28-April 24.

Trustees also approved long-term substitute teacher appointments for Brooke Bene (Southdown School, classroom), effective December 14-June 30 and Tina Balducci (Washington School, special education), effective February 8-April 24.

Summer special education program staffing was approved with the appointments of Nancy Wilson, Linda Costello-Roth, Kaaren Palumbo and Kathleen McCourt.

Vanessa Nilsen (teacher) and Patrick Flynn (custodian) were added to the district's list of approved substitute employees.

The Prom Approaches

This year's Huntington High School junior-senior prom will be held on Thursday, June 23 at the Crest Hollow Country Club from 6:30- 11:30pm. Tickets will go on sale next month.
Bunnies, Beans & Baskets

Washington Primary School is holding a bunny, bean and basket drive to benefit the Helping Hands Rescue Mission in Huntington Station. The drive will run from April 4-15. Washington parent Kristin Kanzer is spearheading the drive.

Baskets, chocolate or stuffed bunnies, bags of jelly beans or similarly themed items will be collected in the school lobby during the drive.

The loaded baskets will be given to children utilizing the services of the Helping Hands Rescue Mission.

Trip to see Carousel

Huntington School District second and third graders will be bused from their schools to Huntington High School on Thursday to see a one-hour version of the musical "Carousel."

The show is the Huntington High School's spring drama club production. The event is sponsored by the district's arts-in-education committee.

Transportation Coordinator at Presser

Doris Kocherkevich, the Huntington School District's transportation coordinator, appeared at a press conference with the Suffolk County Police Department last week at Longwood High School in Middle Island.

The presser was held to highlight a statewide effort to crackdown on illegal and potentially fatal passing of buses by motorists. Suffolk County Police announced it will be following buses as the take home students and will ticket motorists illegally passing the vehicles.

Ms. Kocherkevich is the chapter president of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation.

Next School Board Meeting

Huntington School Board members will meet on Monday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams School auditorium. Trustees are expected to adopt the 2011/12 school budget, which will be voted on by district residents on Tuesday, May 17. The public is invited to attend the meeting. There will be two opportunities for public commentary.
