Healthy Turnout for Fall Sports at Huntington High School

The fall season has seen a large turnout for the athletic teams at Huntington High School. There are 311 students participating on 18 varsity and junior varsity squads, according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy and sent to Huntington School Board members.
The eight boys' teams have 146 participants and the 10 girls' squads are filled with 165 athletes. Varsity girls' swimming has the largest roster with 36 athletes, including several from the middle school. (The team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School was eliminated two years ago in a round of budget cuts.)
Junior varsity football counts 35 players in its ranks. The varsity football squad has a 34-man roster. The two high school boys' soccer teams have a combined 47 players while the girls' teams are filled with 36 athletes.
The varsity and junior varsity girls' tennis teams have a combined 21 players. There are eight boys' golf team members. The high school field hockey program has 34 players on the two teams' rosters, seven less than last fall but two more than three years ago.
The Huntington girls' volleyball program is filled with 30 athletes, nine more than last fall. The varsity boys' cross country team has a roster of seven while the girls' cross country squad has eight runners. The boys' varsity and JV volleyball teams have a combined 15 players.
Overall, there are 19 less student-athletes participating this fall compared to the 330 that were on rosters in 2009. Still, the turnout amounts to nearly 25 percent of the enrollment at Huntington High School.
