Huntington JV Plays Lights Out Football

On a glorious late summer afternoon earlier this week, the Huntington junior varsity football team put on quite a display en route to a 29-0 victory over visiting Harborfields.

"The defense played lights out football, allowing only 19 yards of total offense in the first half of the game," said Ron Wilson, who coaches Huntington along with Todd Jamison."

Huntington took the opening kick-off and maintained possession for the next 11 minutes. The long Blue Devil drive stalled on the Harborfields seven yard line after advancing 68 years. The main culprits in the failure to score were a handful of penalties and some missed blocks.

The start of the second quarter saw Huntington's offense get untracked. The Blue Devils' defense also began to dominate. The crowd, which numbered less than 20 at the start of the game, eventually totaled more than 200 and collectively became Huntington's 12th man on the field.

Sophomore Tyler Greenhill enjoyed a big day with 33 carries for 164 yards and four touchdowns. He also notched a two-point conversion. The Blue Devil offense rushed for 217 yards on 51 carries. Greenhill (two receptions for 28 yards), John Mallouk (3-for-24), Troy Greene (2-for-19 and Kiernan McGovern (1-for-33) also hauled in passes. Huntington's offense produced 331 total yards.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devil defense was stellar as 15 different players recorded tackles. Mallouk'd two interceptions and three solo tackles, including two for a loss, and McGovern's five solo tackles, including one for a loss, were among the sensational performances.

The Huntington defensive unit surrendered only 40 yards of total offense to Harborfields in the entire second half. "Our defense was really outstanding," Wilson said. "They read plays well and hit hard."

Sophomore placekicker Pat Reilly shined, too, booting two kick-offs into the end zone for touchbacks and converting one extra point. "It was a very nice game for us and a big win," Wilson said.
