Huntington School Briefs

 

The next meeting of the Huntington School District's Long Range Facilities Planning Committee will be held in the Huntington High School cafeteria on Tuesday, September 21 from 7-9 p.m. The public is invited to attend the session.

Perlongo Approved

The Huntington School Board has approved Matthew Perlongo for appointment as a probationary math teacher. He will be working at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.

 

Mr. Perlongo has been filling in as a long-term substitute math teacher for the past two years in Huntington. He will now be eligible for tenure at the end of his probationary period.

 

Mr. Perlongo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications at SUNY Albany in May 2005. He obtained a Master of Science degree in mathematics, K-12, at Adelphi University in May 2008.

 

District officials reviewed 110 applications and pre-screened 54 candidates before conducting 12 personal interviews prior to recommending Mr. Perlongo for appointment to the position.

Student Government

Teachers Fred Bisogno and Anthony Troffa are back as the Hunting High School student government advisors. This year's slate of officers includes President Alexandra Kiley, Vice President Richie Gray, Treasurer Olivia Weller, Recording Secretary Shane Larkin, Corresponding Secretary Lauren Corcoran and historian Kyle McCartney.

Parrett Sings at Game

Nicole Parrett, a Huntington School District music teacher, sang the national anthem at the Long Island Ducks game at Suffolk County Sports Park on Sunday, August 22. More than 200 family, friends, fellow teachers and community members turned out among the crowd of 6,000-plus. Rain halted the game before its completion. Ms. Parrett will sing again prior to the make-up on Monday, September 6 at 12 noon.

 

Ms. Parrett is assigned to Jefferson Primary School for the 2010/11 school year. She has performed prior to Ducks' games several times in recent years and has always been well-received by fans.

New Dual Language Teacher

Karen Melara has been hired to work as a dual language program teacher at Jefferson Primary School. She was a long-term substitute dual language program teacher in the Huntington School District last spring.

 

Ms. Melara obtained a BS degree in psychology from CUNY-Hunter College in June 2002. She earned a MS degree in counseling at Long Island University-C.W. Post College in May 2005 and a MAT in bilingual education at CUNY-Queens College in May 2009.

 

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Melara worked as an elementary grade level special education, ESL and bilingual teacher assistant in the Copiague School District from October 2005 to January 2009.

 

District officials reviewed 37 applications and pre-screened 25 candidates before conducting nine personal interviews prior to recommending Ms. Melara for appointment to the position. Her probationary period runs to September 1, 2013.

Class Officers

Senior class officers at Huntington High School include President Alexa Giammarino, Vice President Rebecca Deegan, Treasurer Danielle Cerezon, Recording Secretaru Jonah Kramer, Corresponding Secretary Melissa Cartagena and historian Jessica Harris. Teachers Eliana Oranges and Lori Pyzocha are the class advisors.

 

The high school junior class is led by President Joseph Straub, Vice President Brielle Blatt, Treasurer Katherine Shirley, Recording Secretary Alana Alongi, Corresponding Secretary Mackensie Wall and historian Elizabeth Saltman. Teachers Camille Tedeschi and Erik Bruckbauer are the class advisors.
