Trustees Approve ESL Progress Reports

New extensive academic progress reports for ESL students have been approved for use by the Huntington School Board. The reports had previously received a green light by the district's Education Development Committee.

Trustees were told that the new progress reports will provide communication between classroom and ESL teachers and parents and guardians. Classroom teachers can use the reports to monitor the progress in reading and writing of their students who receive ESL services.

"Last year the Treasure Chest reading program was implemented for use by the ESL teachers as the core reading program for ESL students in grades K-6," said Dr. Kenneth A. Card, Jr., assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. "This year we have implemented the Treasures Reading program as the core reading program for our general and special education students in grades 3-6 and hope to implement the program with grades K-2 next year."

The Treasure Chest and Treasures reading programs both use thematic approaches and complement each other. "Through collaboration with the ESL teacher and the information found in the progress report, the classroom teacher will be better able to integrate the skills and knowledge ESL students acquire through the ESL program in their regular classroom instruction," Dr. Card said. "This will ensure good outcomes for our English language learners."
