Fourth Grade Social Studies Instruction is Underway

Everything is in place for fourth graders at Washington, Jefferson, Southdown and Flower Hill primary schools to receive comprehensive social studies instruction this year.

The Huntington School District's fourth grade teachers have been "tireless in their efforts at assembling their social studies materials, ensuring that local maps are available and accessible to students and applying the curriculum mapping work that several teachers worked on last spring," said Joseph Leavy, director of humanities.

The fourth grade social studies is fully up and running as teachers have made whatever adjustments were necessary after the district moved fourth graders back into the four primary school buildings.

Last spring, teachers Cindy Palmirotto, Patrice Monks, Diane Regan, Heather Spatafora and English Language Arts Coordinator Angela Berner worked with intern Allison Daly and Mr. Leavy in drafting, designing and laying out the course curriculum map with the key content, skills and essential questions which all Huntington fourth graders will be exposed to during social studies classes.

"Local and New York state history, geography and government are key elements to this important curriculum," Mr. Leavy said. "Teachers are looking forward to guiding students in the skills and processes required to write the document based question assessment."

Mr. Leavy said there will be a major emphasis on "ensuring students' appreciation for the geography of Long Island and New York and Huntington's place in these larger areas."
