Research Ideas Presented
by Local Historians

Town history came to life last week when a group of prominent local historians met with about two dozen students from J. Taylor Finley Middle School and Huntington High School to discuss potential avenues of academic research.

The delegation included Town Historian Robert Hughes, Irene Moore, chairwoman of the African-American Historic Designation Council, Dr. Alfred Sforza, author of several books on Huntington Station and Rex Metcalf of the Huntington Historic Preservation Commission.

Over the course of more than an hour, the historians presented and discussed local historical research ideas. The session, which was coordinated by the district's social studies department, the Finley Yorker club and the high school's history club, was held in the classroom of Finley teacher Esmeralda Tello.

Students are currently busy developing topics for research projects that will eventually be entered into this year's National History Day competition. The projects must conform and address NHD's national theme: Diplomacy and Dialogue.

"The historians presented avenues of research and committed to helping students and leading teachers in guiding this deep inquiry over the next several months," said Joseph Leavy, district director of humanities.
