Huntington’s Class of 2010 Parents Paint the Rock
Their children haven’t even started classes on campuses yet, but a group of Huntington High School mothers already have that good old college spirit. The parents donned the garb of their respective child’s college of the future and painted the names of the schools on “The Rock.”
The mothers include Ilene Messina, Linda Drace, Denise Tieman, Patrice Monks, Lauretta Tacopina, Donna Smith, Rae Kapur, Jeri McCarthy, Marguerite Teubner, Erika Rabinowitz, and Donna Chisolm.
The project involved more than merely painting the college names on “The Rock,” which is located on the corner of the high school’s north exit. The mothers used the actual official colors of each of the colleges.
Huntington High School officials are busy planning graduation exercises for the Class of 2010. The ceremony will be held Friday, June 25 at 6 p.m. on the turf athletic field at the school. The public is invited to attend the outdoor event, which does not require tickets.
Seniors with outstanding equipment, books or fines are asked to settle their obligations prior to graduation day. Candidates for graduation should report to the high school gym by 5 p.m. on June 25. Boys are expected to wear dress slacks, collared shirts and dress shoes. Girls are asked to wear either a dress or a shirt and blouse. Students are asked not to wear jeans, shorts, tank tops, sneakers or similar apparel. Seniors who do not adhere to these standards will be asked to return home to dress appropriately.
Certain modifications will be in effect since the athletic field is synthetic turf and not natural grass. Students will only be allowed to wear flats on the day of graduation since anyone walking across the field and/or track will damage these surfaces. Parents and guests are not permitted on to the field for that same reason and must enter and exit only through marked gates.
Following the end of the ceremony, the students will march off the field and meet with parents and family members near an archway that will be erected for the event on the baseball field and on the adjoining athletic fields. If tradition holds, thousands of photos will be taken following the ceremony.
Students will be issued four tickets for the graduation exercises. They will only be necessary if it rains and the ceremony is moved indoors to the school auditorium. For more information call the high school at 673-2001.
