Jensen and Dreusike Win State Crowns

Saratoga Springs is a long way from Huntington but the Blue Devil crew team made the trip well worth it as Ben Jensen and Liam Dreusike won state titles in the boys’ junior double at the New York Scholastic Championship Regatta.

The Huntington contingent was among 528 crews competing in the two-day event from across the state. The Blue Devils have built a reputation, sometimes not so quietly, as one of the top programs in the East. This year’s state performance only brightened that glow.

The feat by Jensen and Dreusike carries with it a special honor as the name of Huntington High School will be engraved on a plaque mounted on the boys’ junior double cup, which remains in Saratoga with the Saratoga Rowing Association, the official host of the championships.

The cup will stand among cups previously won by Huntington in women’s single, women’s senior quad and women’s senior double, among others.

In the girls’ senior four, Huntington seniors Liane DeRosa, Alanna Tieman, Katie Getz, and Chelsea Hines captured third place in the state to bring home bronze medals.

Gusting winds on the second day of the event led to the cancellation of semi-finals and final heat in several events as officials grew concerned for rower safety. Standings from earlier time trials served as the final times.

The Blue Devils are coached by Marc Jensen, Rob Polizzo and Amanda Meyer and feature a roster loaded with dedicated, hardworking athletes who typically are among Huntington High School’s top students.

“We have a great crew program in Huntington and we’re very proud of Ben and Liam along with the members of the Girls’ Senior Four,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.
