Summer Arts Program Offers New Hot Marimba Class
This year’s OOMPAH summer arts enrichment program in the Huntington School District is offering several new classes, including an intriguing one focusing on African percussion music called “Hot Marimba.”
Participants in the new class will “explore the exciting world of African percussion music,” according to a program guide available by logging onto the district’s website at www.hufsd.edu.
“Students will learn and perform a variety of African melodies and rhythms on ethnic instruments, including marimba, xylophone, hand drums, shakers and bells,” states the course description. “Here’s your chance to play up a storm on the high school’s percussion equipment, like a real pro! It’s simple, fun and cool to play. No prior experience is required.”
Students entering grades 4-9 are eligible for the summer arts program and can register for up to four classes, which run Monday through Friday. Registration for classes is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. Students from surrounding school districts are also welcome, provided they supply their own instrument for music related classes.
There is a $95 fee for each course, which is identical to last year’s and includes all supplies and an OOMPAH (Organization of Music Parents of Huntington) t-shirt. A $45 registration fee will also be assessed to cover course materials. There is a family discount of $50 for each additional child registering for four classes. Detailed course descriptions and registration information is available on the Huntington School District’s website at www.hufsd.edu. Click on the Arts tab and then on the link for summer programs.
