ATH Presents Scholarship to Joselyn Fajardo

The Associated Teachers of Huntington presented a $2,000 scholarship to Huntington High School senior Joselyn Fajardo at last week’s senior academic awards night. She hopes to one day become a special education and Spanish teacher.
Huntington math teacher Kathy Aufiero made the presentation on behalf of the ATH before a crowd of about 300 students and their family members in the high school auditorium. The ATH is the professional organization representing teachers in the district. For the past four decades, the group has presented an annual scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to become a teacher.
Ms. Fajardo was an intern this year with Huntington High School foreign language teacher Lorena Diaz, gaining practical experience for her future career. Last year she interned with a special education teacher, working with a several disabled student.
“Her teachers consistently describe her as extremely hard working and driven,” said high school guidance counselor Jayne Hallett about Ms. Fajardo. The senior is currently deciding whether to attend SUNY Farmingdale or Suffolk Community College in the fall. She holds a solid 80 grade point average.
Those seeking the ATH award are asked to complete an application that includes an essay detailing their plans to become a teacher. The scholarship is supported by membership dues paid by Huntington’s teachers.
