Elizabeth Mohr Earns
Cohen Scholarship

Ask any of his classmates still residing locally and they will tell you that Joel Cohen was a swell kind of guy. One of Huntington High School’s most well-known and proudest graduates, he was also one of its most successful. So successful, that upon his passing, a generous scholarship fund was endowed in his memory.
This year the fund presented a $1,000 award to senior Elizabeth Mohr. The teenager is headed to SUNY Farmingdale to study nursing. Over the years she has been a key volunteer with the Huntington Community First Aid Squad, heading up Explorer Post 215.
Mr. Cohen was born in Huntington and was a Blue Devil through and through. A 1939 Huntington graduate, Mr. Cohen was an excellent student and a key member of several athletic teams, including the powerful football squad coached by the legendary William Class. He later served as president of Huntington’s Alumni Association.
Mr. Cohen, who owned a local business products company, was deeply involved in the community and many of its organizations. It was in this spirit of service to others that the Joel H. and Selma D. Cohen Vocational Scholarship was created by the Cohen family. The first award was presented in 1993 following Mr. Cohen’s death.
Teachers say Ms. Mohr displays a “sweet personality” and is a cheerful, positive and well-spoken young woman. There’s unanimous agreement among faculty members that her personal qualities are well-suited for a career in nursing.
