Huntington Boys’ Track Clears Hurdles
With a stable of strong athletes, the Huntington High School boys’ track and field team rarely gets intimidated. No hurdle is too high. No challenge too great. This is a group that gets a kick out of competing.
At the Suffolk Frosh/Soph Championship, Huntington finished second with 45 points, just seven points off the pace of first place William Floyd. Tyriek Johnson was a “triple crown” winner, taking the 110m high hurdles (15.13 seconds), 200m dash (23.2) and the long jump (20’8).
Trayvon Toney also enjoyed a big day, winning gold in the discus with a toss of 136’7 and bronze in the shot put (40’2). Ryan Ackerman earned a silver medal in the 800m run, finishing in 2:03. Shaheem Lewis placed second in shot put (38’8) and fourth in the discus (98’11).
Ron Wilson, Huntington’s head coach, was also impressed with Tyler Wolfe, the team’s rising star. Wolfe grabbed two medals, placing fifth in the 3200m run (10:42) and sixth in the 1600m (4:48). Dan McQuade earned a sixth place medal in the 110m high hurdles, crossing the line in 17.14.
