Dempsey Family Donates $3,000 to Southdown School
Huntington School Board members accepted a $3,000 donation to Southdown Primary School by parents John and Jeanie Dempsey “with gratitude” during the first of three scheduled summer meetings of the trustees.
The Dempsey’s made the donation out of appreciation to the Southdown faculty for providing the couple’s son, John, an outgoing third grader, with an outstanding, positive and productive experience at the school.
“You have made this school an incredible place to learn,” the Dempsey’s wrote in a letter to Southdown Principal Michelle Marino. “Your dedication to my son has made such an impact on his life.”
“This is an extremely generous donation that I would like to put toward the purchase of more SMART Boards for the classrooms,” Mrs. Marino said.

Trustees also accepted three other donations at their July 6 meeting. District parent Paul Murphy donated 136 books valued at $17.50 each to J. Taylor Finley Middle School’s library media center.
Stephen Bly donated $150 in teacher Mary Bly’s name for use by the special education department during the 2010/11 school year for a student with special needs. It will be used to subsidize field trips for students.
Dr. Paul Spenadal, a district resident, donated scores of military history books that he collected through his membership in the North Shore Civil War Roundtable. The books will be used by social studies students and teachers.
Those wishing to donate items to the Huntington School District should contact Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Management Services David H. Grackin at 673-2111 or dgrackin@hufsd.edu.
